If you’re new to shooting, walking into a gun range for the first time can feel like a big step. Maybe you’re excited. Maybe you’re nervous. That’s normal. At Survival Trail in Bucks County, PA, we welcome first-time shooters every day—and our goal is to make sure you feel safe, supported, and confident from the moment you arrive.
Whether you’re here for your very first shooting experience, a concealed carry permit class, or simply want to understand the basics of firearm safety, we’re here to walk alongside you—one step at a time.
1. Getting Comfortable Before You Arrive
If you’ve never handled a firearm before, don’t worry—you’re not expected to know everything. You don’t need to be an expert. What you do need is a willingness to learn, an open mind, and respect for safety.
We recommend wearing closed-toe shoes, avoiding loose clothing, and bringing a valid form of ID. If you’re not sure what to bring or if you don’t yet own a firearm, that’s completely fine—we’ll help you with rentals, safety gear, and everything else you need.
2. Checking In at the Range
When you arrive at Survival Trail, you’ll be greeted by friendly staff who understand what it’s like to be new. You’ll be asked to complete a safety waiver, and one of our team members will guide you through the rest of the check-in process.
From there, you’ll receive a safety orientation—even if you’re just observing. This isn’t to test or intimidate you. It’s our way of making sure every person on the range understands the basic rules that keep everyone safe.
3. Learning the Basics of Range Safety
All first-time shooters are introduced to the four basic rules of firearm safety:
-
Treat every firearm as if it’s loaded
-
Keep your finger off the trigger until you’re ready to shoot
-
Never point the gun at anything you’re not willing to destroy
-
Be sure of your target and what’s beyond it
These aren’t just rules—they’re the foundation of responsible gun ownership. At Survival Trail, we don’t just teach you how to shoot—we teach you how to be safe, aware, and in control.
4. Hands-On Support Through Training Classes
If you’re brand new to firearms, we strongly recommend starting with one of our introductory training classes. While our range staff is always available to ensure a safe environment, personal instruction and hands-on guidance are provided through our structured classes, not during general range time.
In our beginner-level courses, you’ll learn:
-
How to safely load and unload a firearm
-
Proper grip, stance, and sight alignment
-
Trigger control and follow-through
-
How to handle malfunctions and maintain awareness
These classes are taught by experienced instructors who specialize in helping first-time shooters build skills and confidence in a calm, supportive environment. You’ll receive step-by-step instruction with plenty of time for questions, dry-fire practice, and live-fire drills—at your pace.
Whether you’re taking our Handgun 101 class or preparing for Concealed Carry, Survival Trail classes give you the foundation for safe and responsible firearm use.
5. A Place Where New Shooters Belong
Gun ownership is a journey—and every journey starts with a first step. At Survival Trail, we pride ourselves on being a place where new shooters feel welcomed, respected, and prepared to grow.
There’s no intimidation, no judgment—just high-quality training in a safe, supportive setting. You don’t have to be tactical to belong here. You just have to be willing to learn.
